Creado por el equipo detrás de Gorillaz (Jamie Hewlett y Damon Albarn), Journey to the West se lleva a cabo tanto por europeos y chinos músicos y cantantes.

El álbum se basa en ''Monkey: Journey to the West'', la ópera que se estrenó en el Festival Internacional de Manchester en 2007. Con las canciones basadas en textos antiguos chino y se lleva a cabo en mandarín, el álbum ha sido grabado en Londres y Pekín en los últimos doce meses.
